Winter
• The Voorheesville girls basketball team gave eventual state champion Hoosic Valley a battle before losing 36-28 in the Section II Class C finals.
Morgan Anderson’s three-pointer in the third quarter gave Hoosic Valley an 18-16 lead, and Cassidy Chapko added five clutch free throws to keep the Lady Indians in front.
Sarah Madden scored a team-high seven points for Voorheesville, which was seeking its second consecutive Class C title.
• In Class B, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk reached the Sectional semifinals before losing to Colonial Council rival Watervliet 49-43. Samantha Randio had 18 points to lead the Lady Indians.
• On the boys basketball front, Bethlehem and Guilderland lost in the Class AA quarterfinals. Troy defeated Bethlehem 54-44, while Bishop Maginn knocked out Guilderland 49-40.
The Troy-Bethlehem game became better known for the injury suffered by Flying Horses center Javion Ogunyemi than for the final score. Ogunyemi dislocated his ankle early in the second quarter and was lost for the remainder of the playoffs.
Guilderland’s offense struggled in the Dutchmen’s loss to Bishop Maginn. Leading scorer Cameron Dobbs was limited to 14 points, nearly half of his regular season scoring average.
• Bethlehem’s Matt Crawford grabbed a public school title in the boys 600-meter race at the state indoor track and field meet. Crawford finished with a time of 1:20.62, less than a tenth of a second ahead of Colonie’s Giancarlo Sainato.
Guilderland’s Joseph Cornell was part of the Section II sprint medley relay team that placed second in the intersectional race with a time of 8:57.40.
• On the wrestling front, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk’s Alex Soutiere got to the Division II finals in the 285-pound weight class at the state tournament. Soutiere was pinned by Beekmantown’s Hayden Head 47 seconds into the second period to place second.
• Alex Lednev came up big for the Bethlehem boys swim team at Sectionals. The senior was named the Most Outstanding Performer in Division 1 after winning the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke titles, as well as leading the Eagles’ 200-yard medley relay team to a Sectional title.
• The Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk girls bowling team placed fourth at the state tournament with 5,252 pins. Maisie Snyder had the second-best individual game at states with a score of 241 pins.
Ravena got to the state tournament by beating two-time defending champion Colonie by nearly 200 pins at Sectionals. Kelci Margiasso recorded a six-game series of 1,319 pins to pace the Lady Indians.
• Bethlehem finished fourth in the Capital District High School Hockey League standings in the 2011-12 season and lost to Christian Brothers Academy in the Section II Division 1 quarterfinals.
Spring
• The Voorheesville baseball team won its first Sectional title by beating Hoosick Falls 5-1 in the Class C finals. Pitcher Kevin Connolly limited Hoosick Falls to one run on five hits to help the Blackbirds knock off the Panthers. Anthony Scaccia contributed a two-run triple.
Voorheesville got as far as the state semifinals before losing to Section I champion Haldane 6-0.
Guilderland reached the Class AA semifinals in Sectionals by beating defending champion Shaker 6-1 in the quarterfinals. But the Dutchmen’s ride ended with a 2-1 loss to Columbia.
• Guilderland’s softball team turned in a surprise run to the Sectional finals. The Lady Dutch scored 22 runs in beating Bethlehem and Colonie – the two teams that finished ahead of them in the Suburban Council South Division standings – to make the Class AA title game. But Shenendehowa pitcher Erika Daigle limited Guilderland to three baserunners in a 4-0 victory to give the Plainsmen their first Sectional title since 2008.
• In girls lacrosse, Shaker denied Guilderland the Sectional championship by beating the Lady Dutch 9-8 in the Class A finals. The Lady Dutch entered the game as the No. 1 seed and the lone undefeated team in the field.
•The Guilderland boys lacrosse team reached the Sectional semifinals before running into Niskayuna. Luke Goldstock and Tanner MacIvor each scored four goals to lift the Silver Warriors past the Dutchmen 16-3.
• Bethlehem’s Victor Fox turned in a fourth-place finish at the state high school golf championships at Cornell University. The junior had a two-day score of 152, one stroke behind third-place finisher Dan Lapp of Trumansburg.
• Bethlehem track stars Jackie Kearney and Parker Ruetz won individual titles at the Section II Division I meet. Kearney claimed the girls pentathlon title with 3,069 points, while Ruetz won the boys discus with a throw of 142 feet, 8 inches.
• In boys tennis, Bethlehem reclaimed the Section II Class A team title by beating Guilderland in the finals. However, Guilderland’s doubles team of Austin Malerba and Erick Kopff defeated Bethlehem’s Nick DeLuke and Nick Mashuta in the Sectional finals.
