The Saratoga Springs boys and girls cross country teams swept the Class A titles at Friday’s Section II Championships at Saratoga Spa State Park.
Saratoga placed four girls in the top 10 to win the Sectional championship with 32 points. Shenendehowa was second with 66 points, and Shaker fended off Bethlehem by five points to place third with 112 points.
Saratoga’s Taylor Driscoll earned the individual title in Class A with a time of 17:26.08. Teammate Keelin Hollowood was second with a time of 17:41.32, and Shaker’s Maryanna Lansing placed third with a time of 17:46.29.
Sarah Morin (eighth place, 18:05.26), Spencer Hayes (10th, 18:17.72) and Olivia Morrow (11th, 18:24.94) rounded out Saratoga’s top five.
Individual berths to next weekend’s state meet went to Lansing, Colonie’s Bellame Bower (fourth place, 17:55.94), Niskayuna’s Felicia Sciortino (fifth, 17:56.61), and Shen’s Caroline Hampton (sixth, 17:58.79) and Julia Zachgo (seventh, 18:04.41).
Saratoga’s boys team had no trouble winning the Class A title. The Blue Streaks finished with 31 points, 60 points ahead of runner-up Shen. Colonie finished third with 95 points, one point ahead of fourth-place Shaker.
Jay Navin led Saratoga with a second-place finish in a time of 15:20.75, less than three seconds behind individual champion Philo Germano of Albany. Brent Freestone grabbed third place for Saratoga with a time of 15:30.14, and Aidan Tooker placed fifth with a time of 15:33.62. Evan Quinones (10th place, 15:37.98) and Gavin Gaynor (11th, 15:39.74) capped Saratoga’s top five.
Germano is joined on the Section II Class A team by Bethlehem’s Stephen Booker (fourth place, 15:33.29), Shaker’s Adam Schwenzfeier (sixth, 15:33.97), Colonie’s Jon Holmes (seventh, 15:34.29) and Shen’s Dan Janeczko (eighth, 15:34.61).
Bishop Gibbons and Holy Names lived up to their No. 1 state rankings by winning the Class B titles.
Holy Names turned in the most dominating performance of the day by taking five of the top six places to finish with 17 points in the girls race. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake had four runners in the top 10 to place second with 40 points.
Loudonville resident Catherine Maloy led Holy Names by winning the individual title with a time of 17:39.67. Two more Holy Names runners finished before BH-BL’s Emily Digman broke up the Albany private school’s pack by placing fourth with a time of 17:58.98.
Digman is one of four BH-BL girls heading to the state meet next weekend to compete as part of the Section II team. Jordan Casey (seventh place, 18:27.60), Meagan Roecker (eighth, 18:29.74) and Lindsay Bachus (10th, 18:34.07) also qualified for states.
Scotia-Glenville was fifth in the girls team standings with 181 points, while Schalmont placed 11th with 308 points and Mohonasen finished 12th with 318 points.
In the boys Class B race, Bishop Gibbons eased past BH-BL 35-69 for the team title. Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk was sixth with 187 points, and Scotia-Glenville finished seventh with 226 points.
BH-BL’s John Rabideau and Patrick McGuinness both qualified for the state meet with top-10 finishes. Rabideau was sixth with a time of 15:47.68, and McGuinness placed eighth with a time of 15:50.76.
Mekeel Christian Academy took second place in the boys Class D team standings with 86 points behind top-10 finishes by Jake Urys and Ryun Murphy. Urys qualified for the state meet with a third-place time of 16:30.17, while Murphy finished eighth with a time of 16:52.17.
Greenwich won the Sectional title in Class D with 55 points.
The state meet takes place Saturday, Nov. 10, at Elma Meadows Golf Course near Buffalo.
