NYS Amateur: Victor Fox leads after Day 1

A couple extra hours of sleep put Victor Fox in the right frame of mind.

The Bethlehem Central High School graduate shot a 4-under-par 68 to take the lead on the first day of the New York State Men’s Amateur Golf Championships Tuesday at Schuyler Meadows Club.

`I really only had a couple of hiccups,` said Fox, who is representing Delmar’s Normanside Country Club. `Other than that, I had a really solid round.`

A three-hour weather delay at the start of the opening round allowed Fox to catch some extra shut-eye.

`I didn’t really mind it, being a teenager,` said Fox, who will be attending the University of Maryland on a golf scholarship. `And the (morning) rain really softened up the greens.`

Fox had a strong start to his opening round. Last year’s Section II champion birdied four of his first seven holes to grab the lead.

Fox bogeyed No. 18 to lose one stroke off his hot start, but he came back with birdies on No. 2 and No. 6 to move to 5-under-par. A three-putt bogey on No. 8 left him at 4-under-par, two strokes ahead of Rochester’s Trevor Sluman.

Several more Capital District golfers are in prime position to make the cut for the 40-man final on Thursday. eClub Capital District members Alex Kinkaid and Matthew Canavan are part of a six-way tie for third place at 1-under-par, with Canavan still needing to complete three holes before Wednesday’s second round.

Saratoga Spa Golf Course’s David Pallas and Ballston Spa Country Club’s Louis Walsh are part of a large group tied for 14th place at 1-over-par. Country Club of Troy’s Dave Mooradian is also at 1-over-par, but he still has five holes to complete his first round.

The first round will conclude Wednesday morning, followed by the second round.
