At this year’s final Colonie Town Board meeting on Thursday, Dec. 20, Town Supervisor Paula Mahan took a short break from the agenda to honor three Colonie youth sports teams and their recent achievements.
Each team won awards that made Colonie history, and Mahan presented each with a congratulatory plaque. The teams recognized were the Colonie Pop Warner Pee Wee Cheerleading Team, who won the 2012 Pee Wee National Pop Warner Cheerleading championship at the ESPN Wild World of Sports Complex; the North Colonie Jr. Pee Wee Team, who won the 2012 Jr. Pee Wee National Pop Warner Cheerleading 2nd Place Award; and Shaker High School’s Blue Bison football team, who won the Section II Class AA Championship, a first for the school’s history.
Parents, siblings, school officials, coaches and teammates hailing from both South and North Colonie School Districts filled Memorial Town Hall.
“We’re so fortunate when we look at the beautiful community we have,” Mahan said. “We just have so much to be proud of.”
Counsel to Gov. Andrew Cuomo Mylan Denerstein paid a visit to the ceremony on behalf of the governor, but also as a parent of one of the students on the winning teams. As a special guest, she presented a certificate to each member of every team and their coaches, congratulating them on their “extraordinary excellence.”
“We need you to continue these values and go on to great things,” Denerstein said.
When the ceremony ended, the room emptied out and the meeting continued. The Town Board finished up some last-minute housekeeping for the end of the year and to prepare for next.
The board also approved an agreement with Logical Net to rebuild the Colonie website. Board member Daniel Hornick said this will be a six-month agreement and cannot exceed $10,000.
Two public hearings were scheduled for 2013; one on the establishment of Extension No. 161 to the Latham Water District on Thursday, Jan. 17, and the other on the Town of Colonie’s Community Development Block Grant and HOME programs on Thursday, March 7.
