Editor, The Spotlight:
Having lived in Colonie for almost all of my 77 years, I am extremely opposed to the sports complex next to Memory Gardens Cemetery.
For 40 years, I lived across the road from the cemetery. The traffic is now worse than it has ever been, and now we do not need any more congestion on the road.
No matter what the developer says, people will park in the cemetery and walk over. What are we going to do? Place a police detail there at every game?
Colonie has the finest police force; they do not need that extra duty.
A long time ago the town officials came up with a plan to widen the road. Two homes on the corner of Wilshire and Westchester were bought out by the town and torn down. Families were displaced. And still today the land is overgrown with bushes and weeds. No road work at all. The plan was great and badly needed. This plan was never followed up on by the current administration.
Memory Gardens is a sanctuary. Let the dead rest in peace. Many people paid a lot of money to purchase the plots for their loved ones. Now let them enjoy the reverence when they visit the graves. They do not need noise distraction from a sports complex.
I am for all types of sports in the proper atmosphere. There is an abundance of land in Colonie, let them look elsewhere.
