Authorities are investigating an apparent bomb threat found last night in a bathroom at Guilderland High School. Around 10:45 p.m., Tuesday, March 17, a custodian allegedly found “Bomb 11:45, 3/20” written on a boys’ bathroom wall in the quad area of the high school. School district administrators were informed and the Guilderland Police Department was immediately contacted. No suspects have been indentified. Principal Thomas Lutsic sent a letter home with high school students Wednesday, March 18, explaining the incident. “As a school district, we take very seriously our responsibility to provide a safe environment for our students and staff,” Lutsic said in his letter. “Even though we believe this incident to be a hoax, it is being treated as a serious matter. As a precautionary measure, we are planning to take several steps to increase our campus security throughout the evening of March 19, as well as during the day on March 20.” During Thursday night, the school will be locked down and law enforcement will sweep the building for any threats. The school will remain closed until students arrive for class the following morning. On Friday, “additional precautionary measures” will also be initiated during the school day, according to Lutsic. “Whenever any threats are made, there is a resulting negative impact on the entire school community,” Lutsic said in a statement. “I encourage parents to discuss this situation with their children and to explain that a false bomb threat directed toward a school in New York is a Class E felony subject to criminal prosecution.” District officials are continuing to investigate the incident with the assistance of local police. “The person or persons responsible will face serious disciplinary and criminal action,” said Lutsic.
