A man authorities say was intoxicated and traveling at incredible speeds is facing criminal charges for allegedly causing a crash on the Northway in November.
Anton K. Hawkins, 25, of Schenectady, was charged on Thursday, Dec. 6, with the felonies of reckless endangerment in the first degree, vehicular assault in the second degree, aggravated unlicensed operation in the first degree and the misdemeanor of DWI. He’ll also be charged with multiple traffic violations.
Police said shortly after 5 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, Hawkins caused an accident on the Northway just north of the Twin Bridges that caused a vehicle to roll over. Four passengers were in the vehicle and one was ejected in the crash. She was seriously injured with a broken collar bone, ribs and pelvis. Two other people in the car were treated at Albany Medical Center and released.
Police allege Hawkins was not only intoxicated at the time of the crash, but was driving at speeds in excess of 130 mph.
He was arraigned in the Town of Halfmoon Court remanded to the Saratoga County jail in lieu of $20,000 cash or $40,000 bond. Hawkins was scheduled to return to the court at Dec. 12.
Hawkins had failed to make his scheduled appearance in Halfmoon Town Court, police said, so a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was arrested by the Schenectady Police Department on charges of aggravated unlicensed operation and impersonation for claiming he was someone else, police said.
