A two-car crash in Niskayuna took the life of a Schuylerville teen and left a Schenectady man with “serious injuries,” according to police.
Nicholas Giovannone, 16, was driving a 1991 Honda eastbound on Aqueduct Road when his vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane and struck another vehicle head-on, according to police. The crash occurred on Saturday, Aug. 4, at around 4 p.m. Police said Giovannone was pronounced dead at the scene.
Joseph Mormon-Tibbs, 25, of Schenectady, was driving the second vehicle, a 2002 Ford Taurus, involved in the crash. Police said he was transported by Med-Flight to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries.
The Niskayuna Police Department and State Police are continuing to investigate the fatal crash.
Police said preliminary contributing factors causing the crash was Giovannone’s “apparent speed” and failure to stay within a lane. Police have not determined the specific speed he was traveling yet. Giovannone was not wearing a seat belt, according to police.
Toxicology results will be included in the Schenectady County Medical Examiner’s report, police said.
Niskayuna Fire Districts 1 and 2, Schenectady Fire Department and Mohawk Ambulance Service assisted in responding to the incident.
Police said more information would be provided as it becomes available.
