Police allegedly witnessed three teens breaking into cars, but were unsure if the group is responsible for a rash of recent vehicle larcenies.
On Monday, July 30, at about 1:43 a.m., the Rotterdam Police Department received a report of three individuals stealing from vehicles on Van Cortland Street. Police responded and allegedly observed three males looking into parked vehicles with flashlights.
After stopping the group, police allegedly discovered the trio to be in possession of stolen items from different cars in the area. All three were charged with criminal possession of stolen property and possession of burglar tools.
The two 15-year-olds, who police did not identify due to their ages, will be petitioned to Schenectady County Family Court. Vikash Sumair, 16, of Sante Fe Street, Schenectady, is set to appear in Rotterdam Town Court to answer the charges.
Over the summer, there have been several incidents of cars being broken into in different neighborhoods, police said. The investigation into the break ins is continuing, police said.
Police urged residents to lock their cars when parked in the road or driveway and to not leave items of value in a car.
