The Schenectady Jewish Community Center was able to reopen its outdoor pool before the Fourth of July holiday weekend, but the hunt for the culprit, or culprits, is continuing with an added incentive.
Schenectady JCC officials on Monday, July 2, announced a $1,000 reward would be given to anyone supplying information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for recent pool vandalism. The Niskayuna Police Department has been investigating the alleged incident.
Broken glass, “amongst other things,” on Monday, June 25, were allegedly found in the outdoor pool at the William & Estelle Golub Family Pool & Tennis Club at the facility. The pool was drained and cleaned to repair the damage. The vandalism also inconvenienced its summer program, which was in its first week; along with members seek relief from the summer heat.
The 365,000-gallon pool was refilled after more than three days of repair work. Repairs are estimated to cost around $35,000.
SJCC officials also said it is working to start an initiative to raise funds to increase security at the facility and create educational community program about the “dangers of vandalism and destruction of public property,” according to a press release.
