The annual golf tournament put on each year by the Nathaniel Adams Blanchard American Legion Post in Bethlehem suffered a minor setback after door prizes for the tournament were stolen out of the event organizer’s car. The fundraiser benefits local World War II veterans.
John Rees, chairman of the event, said he was parked at the American Legion Post on West Poplar Drive when all of the prizes were stolen from his car.
Bethlehem Police Lt. Thomas Heffernan said the incident occurred between the evening of Thursday, June 21 and the early morning of June 22. He said a green money bag full of donated gift certificates and paperwork had been stolen. Some, but not all, of the items were recovered, according to police.
The event went on as planned on Monday, June 25, and several local businesses stepped forward to donate new prizes.
Each year, the golf tournament raises about $3,000 to help send World War II veterans to see the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. through the Honor Flight Network.
Police said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
