A Latham firefighter lead State Police on a high speed chase on Saturday, June 9, leading to charges, according to police reports.
Nabeel Saeed, 23, of Latham, was charged with reckless endangerment in the first degree, unlawful fleeing in the third degree and numerous vehicle and traffic law violations after an 8-mile pursuit on I-87 that lasted several minutes, according to police reports.
Around 5:55 p.m. on June 9, State Police observed a motorcycle with two occupants traveling northbound on I-87 at a high rate of speed and when the speeding motorcycle cross the Twin Bridges into Saratoga County, troopers initiated a traffic stop and turned on their emergency lights and siren, according to police reports. Instead of stopping, Saeed accelerated to 147 mph with “his now unwilling passenger” still on the motorcycle for a police chase that covered 8 miles before he finally complied with troopers’ directions at the intersection of Routes 9 and 146, said police.
The Latham Fire Department released a statement on Monday, Jun 11, saying it “recognized” the charges against Saeed and does “not condone the actions associated with the charges.” Saeed has been placed on leave pending the investigation and outcome of court proceedings, said the department.
According to the fire department, Saeed has been an “active responding member” for three and a half years and serves as a lieutenant.
