A two-car crash at the intersection of Routes 20 and 30 in the Town of Duanesburg claimed the life of an Esperance resident. On Wednesday, May 23, at around 4:50 p.m., State Police responded to the car crash. An initial investigation revealed a vehicle driven by James P. Barton, 78, of Route 30 in Esperance, was traveling westbound on Route 20 and allegedly attempted to make a left turn on to Route 30 south, according to police. A second vehicle, operated by Cheryl J. Lennox, 63, of Knight Road in Delanson, was traveling eastbound on Route 20 before striking Barton’s vehicle in the middle of the intersection, according to police. Carol J. Barton, 78, a passenger in the struck vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Speed, alcohol and drugs didn’t appear to be a factor in the crash, according to police, but the failure to yield the right of way was “a contributing factor.” Central Bridge Ambulance took James Barton to Albany Medical Center. Esperance Ambulance transported Lennox to Ellis Hospital. Lennox was treated and released, according to police. The State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit is assisting troopers with the ongoing investigation.
