A Charlton man was observed by state police driving at a speed of nearly 170 mph on the thruway in the Village of Ravena on Tuesday, May 2 before being arrested in a town 50 miles from where he was first noticed.
According to police, a state trooper attempted to stop the motorcycle as it slowed for traffic, but the man refused to stop. Police were able to obtain a description of the operator and the license plate number of the Suzuki motorcycle driven by
Nikkolaus McCarthy, 25. Police said the trooper terminated the pursuit due to the speed, but the motorcycle’s description was given out on the air and other troopers clocked its speed at various locations at 150 and 170 mph.
Police said McCarthy was finally stopped 20 minutes later after traveling 50 miles. He had slowed due to traffic in the Town of New Paltz. McCarthy was pulled over and arrested, police noting he was low on gasoline. When McCarthy was informed how fast he was going by police, he said the bike could go `well over 190 mph.`
McCarthy was charged with fleeing police in the third degree, reckless driving, speeding, and operating a motor vehicle out of class because he did not have a motorcycle license. He was arraigned in the Village of Ravena Court and remanded to the Albany County Correctional Facility on $20,000 bail pending further court action, according to police.
