A Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake bus driver was killed today while behind the wheel of his personal vehicle when his SUV collided with a district bus. Bob Kucharski died at the scene of the accident, near the intersection of Hubbs and Schauber roads in Ballston Lake. The empty bus was being driven by Amy Powell, who district spokeswoman Christy Multer said has a clean, 15-year driving record with the district. “The very excellent, wonderful good news was that there was no children on the bus,” Multer said. Powell was transported to Ellis Hospital and was released.
Kucharski had driven a school bus for the district for eight years.
`This is an extremely sad time for the district, especially for our bus drivers, bus mechanics, dispatchers, and the transportation supervisor,` said Assistant Superintendent Jacqueline St. Onge, in a statement. `Bob was an excellent driver, and a wonderful man who was always willing and eager to help everyone else. Everyone here loved him.` The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash. Further details were not immediately available.
