A weekend law enforcement sweep in Albany County resulted in 23 arrests of drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Three drivers were charged with violations of Leandra’s Law for driving with a passenger under the age of 15 in the car. Police agencies across the county made 1,059 stops between Nov. 23 and Nov. 27 with 617 citations issued for a variety of violations.
As part of a new approach, the DWI enforcement effort was not made public. Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple made the announcement regarding the new policy in October.
Enforcement efforts in Albany County will also be carried out in honor of victims of DWI crashes. The latest was held in honor of Donna Rehm, a taxi driver killed in a 2006 crash with a drunk driver in Watervliet.
