At Milestone Restaurant & Bar in Glenmont, diners are sure to come away with a “fresh” perspective. “Our goal is to use affordable, fresh, local produce as much as possible,” says Mike Mastrantuono, who owns the restaurant, along with his brother, Lou, and son, Chef Michael. Mastrantuono says the three are frequent shoppers at local farmers markets and farm stands in their quest for quality ingredients. Since its grand opening in October 2011, Milestone has offered a diverse menu with elegant entrees like seared sea scallops and filet mignon, as well as more casual fare like specialty pizzas and artisan burgers. Fresh is also the word of the day when it comes to the restaurant’s seafood selection, with daily shipments coming directly from the Boston harbor. Formerly the landmark Stone’s End Restaurant, which was built in the late ’50s and was a popular stopping place for well-heeled travelers on their way from Manhattan to Saratoga Springs, the handsomely refurbished Milestone presents a fresh spin on elegance. Customers can enjoy the quiet refinement of the dining room or experience a more casual eating environment in the lounge area. “The goal was to bring it back to a Stone’s End-type atmosphere,” says Mastrantuono.
All that seems to resonate with Milestone’s patrons, who have been extremely receptive to the restaurant’s promotions, such as the Monday-Friday happy hour featuring half-price drinks, and ladies night every Thursday. Mastrantuono says that one of Milestone’s more popular promotions is the “meal deal” available Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. For $23.95, customers can get a take-out meal for four with their choice of three entrees over pasta, a salad and bread. Orders should be called in ahead of time (436-3480) so they are ready on arrival. Mastrantuono says that in addition to being a great buy for customers, the meal deal keeps the restaurant busy during a traditionally slow part of the week. The restaurant has also been doing a brisk business cooking for and hosting special events.
“We’re doing a lot more catering for private parties than we even anticipated,” says Mastrantuono. Milestone is about more than great food; it is a restaurant with a heart. Chef Michael says the restaurant has backed a number of causes, from autism awareness to breast cancer research, and the owners frequently host fundraising events where 10 percent of a diner’s bill is donated. Where there is a need, “I make myself readily available,” says Chef Michael.
Recently the chef donated for auction a five-course meal for two with wine pairing to benefit Living Resources.
