T.A.C.S. Autobody is without a doubt a mainstay of the local business scene, and not just because of its history or commitment to excellence. T.A.C.S. is visible from its free loaner cars being driven around the Capital District and its association with local groups like the Boy Scouts in Bethlehem.
The company has been open since 1979, when Erwin Ungerer founded it, and it is still family owned and run today, with Mr. Ungerer’s three sons, Matt, Kevin and Brian, running the business together, along with five other full-time employees.
These fully-trained automotive experts repair cars ranging from Plymouths and Buicks to Jaguars and Porsches, and everything in between. They repair an average of 85 cars per month with countless other services, such as routine maintenance, free loaner cars, 24-hour towing service and many others that promote the atmosphere the brothers strive to achieve.
“You walk into our facilities and there is a friendly face to help you,” said Matt Ungerer. “We’re trying to make Bethlehem better.”
It is quite obvious that unmatched customer service and quality automotive care are the top priorities, and one can see that simply by stepping into T.A.C.S.’s building at 525 Route 9W in Glenmont. Upon walking in the door, one notices the care with which they handle every potential customer, which has undoubtedly led to their flawless reputation within the community.
The other ways in which the company maintains close ties with the Bethlehem community is by sponsoring the Boy Scout Troop 75 Sports Mart sale at the high school, as well as the Boy Scout’s many fundraising carwashes. T.A.C.S. is also planning on sponsoring the Tri Village Little League, and is an active member of the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce.
The shop aims to keep its money within the community, and often cross-markets with other local businesses for various specials throughout the year, something that definitely separates T.A.C.S. from chain automotive repair businesses.
When asked about what truly individualizes T.A.C.S. from other businesses, Ungerer said, “Car accidents are stressful and out of the ordinary, and being able to walk into a community-based business where we’re able to hold your hand through it, unlike other larger companies in the automotive industry, that sets us apart.”
That is exactly what those in the community appreciate about the company, and the Ungerer brothers are sure to keep delivering on their motto of, “Doin’ nice things for people and the cars they drive,” for a long time.
