An interactive family-oriented program celebrating Smokey Bear’s 68th birthday will be held Saturday, Aug. 11, at 10 a.m. at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Five Rivers Environmental Education Center, 56 Game Farm Road, Delmar.
At this indoor/outdoor program, Forest Ranger Karen Glesmann will recount the compelling story of Smokey Bear and go over the cardinal rules of fire safety. Participants will get to operate an Indian fire pump, see how modern forest ranger trucks are specially equipped and get to meet a special guest. Families are encouraged to bring a camera.
Parents and children must accompany each other. This program is open to the public free of charge, but space is limited. Call Five Rivers at 475-0291 to register by Wednesday, Aug. 8.
