About 750 kids from area YMCA summer camps converged on the Guilderland Y’s Camp Nassau on Friday, Aug. 5, to celebrate Strong Kids Day with a day of fun, fellowship and games.
Strong Kids Day has long been an annual tradition for YMCA campers, and it’s meant to remind of the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, responsibility and respect, as well as provide a fun summer day.
“We used to do them just at your own camp…and the last couple years we brought all the camps together,” said Camp Nassau Director Brian Robinson.
Meeting at Camp Nassau this year were campers from the YMCA camps in Troy, Albany, Schenectady, Bethlehem, Greenbush, Greene County and the Southern Saratoga YMCA.
The YMCA’s summer camps run for 10 weeks, and kids can come for a single week or for the entire program. The programming varies from branch-to-branch, but on Friday campers were engaged in a lot of the classic outdoor games of summer like tag, soccer and water fights. There’s even a zipline at Camp Nassau.
“It’s a celebration for YMCA kids,” Robinson said. “It’s just to give the kids a day of recreation and a great day out.”
