With temperatures around Saratoga County and the entire Capital Region expected to climb into the mid- to upper-90s on Thursday and Friday, with heat indexes of 100 to 110 degrees and high humidity, towns are suggesting various locations residents can go to stay cool.
The Town of Clifton Park is steering residents to the Shenendehowa Adult Community Center off Vischer Ferry Road.
That’s pretty much it. It’s a fairly large facility, said J. Jude Hazard, information specialist for the town.
Malta residents looking for relief from the heat can head to the Malta Community Center at One Bayberry Drive or a library, said Supervisor Paul Sausville.
`Those would probably be the most interesting place for our residents to visit because there’s so much to do there; activities, reading stations, as well as the library itself,` said Sausville. `I thnk it’d be a lovely way to spend the afternoon on a hot day.
Sausville said residents are also welcome to stop in to Town Hall if they’re in the area.
`Town Hall is air conditioned so if someone were walking by and wanted to come in and rest, certainly they would be welcome,` said Sausville. `We are a small town that value and cherishes all of our people and certainly would rescue them if they were in distress.`
Saratoga Springs doesn’t have any official cooling stations lined up but said residents should follow some advice from the Red Cross.
Cheryl Murphy, regional response manager at the American Red Cross Northeastern New York Region, said residents should go to public places with air conditioning like the mall, movie theaters, etc.
`We don’t have anything [set up] at this time,` aid Murphy. `If you don’t have air conditioning and need to get cool, head for someplace public.`
Murphy said it’s also important for people to check on their neighbors, especially senior citizens, and to drink plenty of water.
`Seniors should have other people check on them or make sure they have contact with people so they know they’re okay,` said Murphy.
An excessive heat watch is in effect from Thursday afternoon through Friday evening in Saratoga County and the surrounding Capital Region, according to the National Weather Service in Albany.
