A Bethlehem teen who has been doing charity work for a village in Africa has launched a new fundraising effort.
Sara Weinman made a visit to Ddegeya village in Uganda this past February, and while conditions there are much different from those here in the states, one of the things that left an impression on her was how schoolchildren in this remote village didn’t have any schoolbooks.
Most kids in Uganda might go to school, but they’ll never touch a book, Weinman said in an interview with The Spotlight shortly after her trip.
The BC high schooler was involved heavily in starting the Engeye Teen Connection, an offshoot of a group that helps people in Ddegeya, and she recently launched the ETC Bucks for Books drive.
The money raised in the drive will go directly towards purchasing textbooks and school supplies for Ugandan classrooms, which will be delivered by ETC member Brian Hickey when he travels to Africa in July.
