The residents of the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk School District for the second year running have rejected the proposed school budget.
The vote was a close one at 1,039 to 959. The proposed $42.5 million budget was 0.8 percent higher than this year’s spending plan, which is a contingency budget adopted after voters turned down a budget last May.
The tax levy would have gone up 3.4 percent under the plan.
Also rejected was a proposition to purchase new school buses. The vote came out 1,053 to 917.
With the budget rejected, the school board can put the same budget up for another vote, revise the budget and put it to voters again or go straight to a contingency budget. Last year the board decided not to hold another vote.
Of eight candidates running for three-year seats on the school board, voters selected two newcomers in Jeff Lukens (with 744 votes) and Rodney Kryzkowski (with 788 votes). Incumbent Mike Robbins received 879 votes and will serve a second term. Christopher Pennock, the other incumbent, did not garner enough votes to return to the board for a second term.`
