To Terell Winney’s eyes, the basket was huge.
The senior guard scored 31 points over the first three quarters to lead the Scotia-Glenville boys basketball team to a 74-43 Foothills Council victory over Hudson Falls Friday.
It was just one of those nights, I guess, said Winney, who drained six three-pointers. `My teammates did a great job of getting me the ball … and I just kept shooting.`
The game was supposed to be a showdown between Winney and Hudson Falls’ sharpshooter, Jon Hammond. But while Winney was making his shots, Scotia-Glenville’s defense limited Hammond to 11 points — half of his average of 22 points per game.
`He’s a great player, and you have to do the best you can against him,` said Scotia-Glenville coach James Giammattei of Hammond. `We were aware of him at all times, and we did a great job of covering him.`
On the other hand, Winney couldn’t be covered — especially in the first half. Hudson Falls’ defense often couldn’t keep up with the speed at which Scotia-Glenville (5-1 league, 9-1 overall) passed the ball around. Once the ball got in Winney’s hands, there would only be one Tiger near him, which gave Winney the advantage he needed to hit his shots.
`We moved the ball great, and we shot the ball well,` said Giammattei.
Winney wasn’t the only one making shots. Junior forward Casey Norton scored 17 points, and senior guard Tyler Sutherland came off the bench and scored eight points. Together, Norton and Sutherland made five of Scotia-Glenville’s 14 three-pointers.
The Tartans return to action Tuesday when they travel to Broadalbin-Perth — the only team to defeat them this season.
