Spotlight and other media outlets to take on Albany Dutchmen at Bleecker Stadium
Come out to the ballgame and support a worthwhile cause on Saturday, June 26, at 7 p.m. by coming out to see members of local media outlets play a charity softball game against the Albany Dutchmen, the Capital District’s own New York Collegiate Baseball League team.
All proceeds from the game will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association and go toward Duchenne muscular dystrophy research.
The cause is a special one for Michael Curran, a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, which s fielding three players for the game. Not only is the NALC a national sponsor of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, but Curran’s nephew, Derek Murphy, was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at the age of 2.
Derek, a third-grader at Bell Top Elementary School in North Greenbush, uses leg braces and wheelchair to assist him with physical challenges. Now age 9, he has been the inspiration for Curran to organize numerous fundraising events for Duchenne research.
Though Derek will be at the Double H Hole in the Woods Ranch that evening, his parents, Sue Ellen and John Murphy, will be on hand for the game.
Channel 13 meteorologist Jason Gough said the game appeals to him on a couple levels. This is like killing two birds with one stone. I love to play softball and I love to help out charities, so this should be excellent, said Gough.
This isn’t the weatherman’s first foray into charity softball games. Gough has coordinated a fall game for Toys for Tots for the past four years.
Joining Gough is his cohort Bob Kovachik , as well as players from The Spotlight Newspapers and the Times Union.
Tickets are $5 for adults and proceeds go to MDA. There’ll also be a raffle, an auction and some good, old-fashioned fun ` all for a great cause ` on Saturday June 26, at 7 p.m. under the lights of Bleecker Stadium.
