The Albany County STOP-DWI Program held its 80th countywide DWI sweep from 8 p.m. on Friday May 14, to 5 a.m. Monday, May 17. A total of 1,431 traffic stops were made and 17 drivers were arrested for driving while intoxicated, with six of those arrests being for aggravated DWI, a felony level charge for having a BAC of 0.18 or greater while driving.
The New York State Police, Albany County Sheriff’s Office, and eleven municipal police agencies participated in the sweep which also netted 16 additional people for aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle. The average BAC of all of the DWI arrests was 0.146, with Cohoes Police Department and Troop T of the New York State Police each arresting a driver with a BAC of 0.19, the highest recorded in the sweep. Two alcohol related crashes occurred, with one in Colonie and the other in Guilderland
In addition to the arrests, 542 summonses were issued during the sweep.
The sweep also yielded 91 designated drivers. During the sweep there were no DWAI, driving while ability impaired, or any zero tolerance arrests, with a person under the age of 21 possessing a BAC of 0.02 or greater.
