Guilderland police arrested Eugene A. Singleton, 57, on Sunday, May 9 and charged him under Leandra’s Law, a felony DWI charge for driving while intoxicated with a child in the car. Police responded to a property damage accident in the parking lot of Crossgates near the location of the Standard Restaurant. According to police, Singleton drove with a BAC of 0.12 with his wife Sabrina D. Singleton, 31, and two children, ages 9 and 7 in the car.
Police said that Singleton admitted to letting his 9 year old daughter drive the 1999 Dodge Caravan under his supervision while his wife went into the mall to shop. Singleton was also charged with reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child, and arraigned in Guilderland Town Court later that day. He was remanded to Albany County jail on $20,000 bail.
Police said that Sabrina S. Singleton was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child for allegedly allowing Singleton to operate the vehicle with children inside it while knowing he was intoxicated. Both Singletons are scheduled to make an appearance at Guilderland Town Court on Thursday, May 13.
Police said that the investigation is ongoing and that the case has been referred to the Albany County Department of Social Services.
