Saint Helen’s School in Niskayuna will hold a 5K Mother Daughter’s race on Saturday, May 8, at Central Park in Schenectady.
The event, which will include a kids race at 9 a.m. and the adult walk/run at 10 a.m, is a part of the school’s plan to promote and create scholarships for students in the inner city and outlaying areas of Scotia, Niskayuna, Rotterdam and Glenville. Principal of Saint Helen’s Jennifer Chatain said the school is excited for the event and hopes it will help the school to get involved in the community.
This is a way for all of us in Schenectady County to get involved in the community, said Chatain. `We’re really excited. We’re trying to sign up more runners for the event and we hope to have about 200 runners.`
Kindergarten teacher Tiffany Salisbury is coordinating the event and said the school has already received 50 runners for the event. Registration for the event is $20 and can be done online at the school’s website and students have also worked to sign up family and friends. Students who raise $50 are given a promotional shirt. The school hopes to raise around $1,500 in funds towards future scholarship opportunities.
`We came together as a school community to look for ways to promote our school and make people aware of scholarship opportunities,` said Salisbury. `Anything we can do above or beyond that [$1500 goal] would be fantastic. We are looking for people to be there and come out for the run.`
Registration can be done online before the day of the race and also in the morning before each of the races. Information forms found on the school’s website are available to be downloaded and sent back into the school. For more information, visit www.sainthelens.net.“
