Van Antwerp Middle School in Niskayuna is among 37 middle school and 68 high school teams that will be compete at the U.S. Department of Energy’s 20th annual National Science Bowl in Washington D.C. on Saturday, May 1, at the National 4-H Conference Center in Chevy Chase Middle School.
According to a release from the event, in 1991, the National Science Bowl was started to help students excel in math and science education to help create a diverse and technically trained workforce for the nation.
In a release, Secretary Chu said the National Science Bowl is a way to encourage students to enter careers in science, math and new technologies.
America and the world need the best scientists and engineers to help solve many of the important problems of our time. The National Science Bowl is one important way to encourage our talented young people to direct their talents towards careers in science, mathematics, and our nation’s next technology revolution, he said.
Alongside Van Antwerp Middle School, Bethlehem Central High School from Delmar, NY, will also send a team to the event and represent the Capital Region.
Middle school teams will have a question and answer session on Saturday, May 1, and will also race solar model cars, built by the students, in a science bowl competition on Sunday, May 2, at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda, MD. High School competitions will being on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. with students solving hands on science questions. Championship rounds will begin on Monday, May 4 at 9:30 a.m. in the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.
