Offense has not been a problem for the Christian Brothers Academy baseball team.
The Brothers (3-0 league, 4-0 overall) reached double figures in runs for the fourth consecutive game last Friday when they defeated Bishop Maginn 24-4 in a Big 10 game.
I didn’t quite know what we’d have because we have a young team, said CBA coach Dave Doemel. `I knew that the [junior varsity] team was quite successful last year, and the guys we called up have contributed quite a bit this season.`
Matt Sand continued to light up the scoreboard against Bishop Maginn. Sand belted a three-run homer, added a pair of singles and scored four runs as part of CBA’s 22-hit attack.
`Matt Sand has been hitting very well for us so far,` said Doemel.
Matt Gallup contributed a pair of triples for CBA, which has been battling LaSalle and Schenectady for Big 10 supremacy in the early going.
`The next two weeks will determine how well we’ll do because we’re playing some of the top teams in our league,` said Doemel.
That stretch of tough games begins Wednesday when Schenectady visits CBA. The Brothers then go to Troy Thursday to play LaSalle.
In the Suburban Council, Colonie and Shaker both posted wins Monday. The Garnet Raiders defeated Niskayuna 5-3, while the Blue Bison handled Guilderland 7-2.
Colonie (3-2, 6-3) grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Niskayuna (2-3, 3-3) rallied for three runs in the top of the second, but Garnet Raiders starting pitcher Chris Kerney shut the door after that to post the victory.
Chris Kalica doubled twice for Colonie, which travels to Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Wednesday.
In Guilderland, Shaker (4-1, 5-1) took the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth inning and pulled away with a three-run fifth inning.
Brian Egan singled twice and doubled for the Blue Bison, who remained tied with Saratoga Springs for second place in the Suburban Council North Division standings.
