A petit larceny charge and subsequent arrest turned into something much more on Thursday, March 18. At about 1:42 a.m., Saratoga Springs police arrested Meredith Lickwola, 38, of Casey Road in Schuylerville on a Saratoga Springs City Court Bench Warrant for failing to comply with a sentence imposed, related to a previous petit larceny charge.
Police said when processed at police headquarters, she appeared normal to screening officers and offered no evidence of medical issues. Lickwola was placed in a female only holding cell, pending her appearance in City Court Friday morning and routine supervisory checks of Lickwola were conducted at various intervals throughout the morning.
At about 5:47 a.m., Thursday, Lickwola was found unresponsive in her cell, although she still appeared to be breathing, according to police reports. EMS was immediately contacted, said police, and CPR was administered, but Lickwola’s breathing stopped during this time and she was pronounced dead at Saratoga Hospital Emergency room.
An autopsy is being conducted at Albany Medical Center and a departmental investigation has also been ordered, said police. No further information will be released on this investigation pending the completion of that report.
