After a 10-year wait, the Saratoga Springs hockey team is back on top of the Section II world.
Dan Going’s second-period goal proved to be the game winner as the Blue Streaks defeated defending champion Shaker/Colonie 3-1 in last Thursday’s Division I final at Union College.
Things didn’t look good for top-seeded Saratoga (17-4-1) early on when Corey Brustle scored less than two minutes into the first period to give Shaker/Colonie a 1-0 lead. The Jets didn’t allowed a goal throughout the first two rounds of the playoffs.
Luke Fauler ended Shaker/Colonie’s shutout streak with a goal at 10:44 of the second period that tied the game at 1. Going then scored a short time later to put the Blue Streaks ahead for good.
Fauler added an empty net goal, and goaltender Graeme Bulmer stopped 25 of the 26 shots he faced to guide Saratoga into this weekend’s regional game.`
