A Ballston Spa woman accused of stabbing her husband in November pleaded not guilty in Saratoga County Court Friday, Feb. 5, to charges that she tried to kill her husband. Mary Jane Vautrin was arrested after the arraignment, denied bail and incarcerated in Saratoga County Jail because she’s considered a flight risk, said Saratoga District Attorney Jim Murphy.
Vautrin was charged with two felonies, attempted murder and assault, as well as criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and forgery.
Murphy said that on the night of Nov. 9, Vautrin allegedly tried to kill her husband by stabbing him in his sleep. She didn’t kill him and when he awoke the two had a confrontation, during which time Murphy said Vautrin stabbed herself to make it seem like her husband did it.
Murphy said it appears Vautrin had an elaborate murder plan that stemmed from controversy over family finances. She was charged with forgery for forging her husband’s name on a document that cashed out his life insurance worth $35,000. Child endangerment charges come from the fact that her two elementary-age sons were home at the time of the alleged attack.
