The Guilderland girls basketball team stumbled at the wrong time against Columbia.
The Blue Devils outscored the Lady Dutch 20-9 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 50-45 victory in last Friday’s Suburban Council South Division game in East Greenbush.
Guilderland (0-3 league, 1-3 overall) looked like it was on its way to its first league win of the season after it took a 20-13 lead in the first quarter. But Columbia (1-1, 2-2) stayed with the Lady Dutch over the next two periods before pulling in front in the final eight minutes.
Amanda Batzold led Columbia with 17 points. Hillary Faas contributed 11 points, and Shannon Moldoff added 10 points.
Melissa Winne scored 19 points, and Chelsea Weston chipped in 18 points for Guilderland, which suffered its second consecutive close loss. The Lady Dutch fell to Colonie 55-51 last Tuesday, despite 13-point performances from Katherine Keegan and Erin Kelly.
The road to a league win doesn’t get any easier for Guilderland. After hosting Saratoga Springs Tuesday, the Lady Dutch visit Shaker Friday.
In other Suburban Council action last Friday, Bethlehem (1-2, 1-3) couldn’t contain Colonie’s Tehresa Coles in a 56-52 loss.
Coles scored a team-high 21 points to lead the Garnet Raiders (2-0, 2-0). Ten of Coles’ 21 points came in the fourth quarter, when Colonie outscored Bethlehem 15-8.
Kelly Dillon netted 14 points, and Ashley Loggins added 10 points for the Garnet Raiders.
Jaclyn Oskam paced Bethlehem with 14 points. Bridget Murphy contributed 12 points, and Emily Kirby chipped in 10 points.
The Lady Eagles hosted Shaker Tuesday in their first cross-divisional game. They visit Saratoga Friday.
