The Niskayuna boys basketball team fended off a stubborn Columbia squad to win its own early-season tournament last weekend.
Aaron Wyngowski scored 17 points to lead the Silver Warriors to a 52-47 victory over the Blue Devils in Saturday’s Niskayuna Invitational Tournament title game.
Wyngowski did most of his damage in the paint as he dropped in 12 of his 17 points from the floor. Peyton Houghtaling helped Wyngowski, scoring 10 of his 11 points near the basket.
Kyle Bayly added 10 points for Niskayuna (2-0), which limited Columbia to nine points in the fourth quarter to pull out the five-point win.
The Silver Warriors advanced to the finals by beating Queensbury 62-53 in last Friday’s opening round. Niskayuna led 32-26 at halftime and steadily pulled away to gain the victory.
Bayly led the Silver Warriors with 23 points in a performance that included a pair of three-pointers. Guy Waltman contributed 17 points, and Matt Royce added 12 points.
Niskayuna began its Suburban Council season Tuesday when it hosted Shaker in a North Division game.
Elsewhere last weekend, Scotia-Glenville used a big surge in the second and third quarters to defeat Schalmont 65-43 in a non-league game Friday.
The Sabres (0-2) led 17-8 after the first quarter before the Tartans (2-0) bounced back with a 23-7 second quarter. Scotia-Glenville then took command by outscoring Schalmont 23-6 in the third quarter.
Terrell Winney netted 26 points, and Casey Norton con-tributed 14 points for Scotia-Glenville.
The Tartans don’t play again until next Monday’s Foothills Council opener against Gloversville.
Nick Reali scored 22 points for Schalmont, which traveled to Mechanicville Tuesday for a Colonial Council game.
Schenectady Christian (1-0) began its season last Friday with a 61-29 non-league victory over Cherry Valley/Springfield.
The Falcons soared to a 34-4 halftime lead, and they never looked back as they earned the road win.
Collin Stewart had 19 points, and Chris McCarty added 12 points for Schenectady Christian, which began its Western Athletic Conference season Wednesday against Middleburgh.
Mohonasen returned to action Tuesday when it hosted Bethlehem in a Suburban Council South Division game. The Mighty Warriors won their opening game of the season by pulling out a 41-38 victory over Guilderland last Tuesday.`
