Three area teams competed in last weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls volleyball tournament at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
Loudonville Christian had the most success of the three teams. The Eagles reached the Class C final before being swept by Section VI’s City Honors of Buffalo 25-13. 25-20 and 25-15.
Loudonville Christian began pool play Saturday by splitting its two games with Section IV’s Tioga. The Eagles won the first game 25-19 and lost the second one 25-21.
Loudonville Christian had a lot to prepare for as it played City Honors in pool play, but it lost both games 25-18 and 25-5. That meant the Eagles needed to win their final two games to force a one-game playoff against Tioga, and they did so by sweeping East Rockaway (Section XI) 25-13, 25-14.
Loudonville Christian started strong in its one-game playoff with Tioga, getting big serves and blocks from Jessica Fitzgerald. Tioga stayed close, but the Eagles prevailed 25-22 to earn their trip to the finals.
Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk was in a tough Class B field at the state tournament. The Lady Indians dropped both of their games to Hendrick Hudson (Section I) 25-11 and 25-18, and then they fell to eventual state champion Eden (Section VI) 25-13 and 25-12. R-C-S closed out pool play by splitting its two games against Section XI’s John Glenn, winning the first game 25-21 and losing the second game 25-23.
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake returned to the Class A playoffs, but it couldn’t get out of pool play as it finished with a 2-4 record. The Lady Spartans lost both of their games to Cornwall (Section IX) and Victor (Section V) before beating East Hampton (Section XI) 25-19 and 25-20.
