Dillon King stands alone in Section II boys soccer history.
The Loudonville Christian School senior passed Middle-burgh’s Austin Standhart atop the career goals list by tallying half of his team’s total in an 8-0 victory over Argyle in last Friday’s Section II Class D quarterfinal game at the North Colonie Soccer Complex.
I was both happy and relieved, said King. `Relieved because I don’t have to focus on it anymore and I can focus on winning games, and happy because I got it.`
`It makes it all about soccer again,` said Dillon’s dad and Loudonville Christian coach Jeff King.
It took Dillon quite a bit of time to break Standhart’s record of 133 goals. Dillon scored the first of the three goals he needed less than 15 minutes into the first half, but he had to wait until midway through the second half before he could tie Standhart’s mark.
Once he pulled even, though, it didn’t take long for Dillon to surpass Standhart. He launched a 25-yard shot into the upper right corner of the net to get the hat trick and the record.
`I definitely thought I could do it in that game,` said Dillon.
King wasn’t the only Eagle who had the green light to shoot. Three Loudonville Christian players added goals, led by two goals from Leo Pusatere.
`They played the game plan [in the first half], which was the normal plan,` said coach King. `In the second half, they made the conscious effort to make the extra pass to Dillon.`
Eric Hudspath and Koury Deeb each added goals for Loudonville Christian, which advances to Thuesday’s Class D semifinal against Northville in a rematch of last year’s Sectional final won by Northville 2-1.
`We’ll be geared up extra because it is Northville,` said Dillon. `We’re just going to bring our game and do the best we can … but it does get you emotionally ready to play the game.`
As for Dillon King, he can relax a little knowing that he is now the undisputed king of goal scoring in Section II history ` as acknowledged by Standhart in an e-mail he sent to his successor.
`Austin Standhart is a really nice guy, and his family is, too. It was really nice to get that e-mail,` said Dillon.
