After losing in the last two Section II, Class AA finals, the Christian Brothers Academy boys basketball team reclaimed its spot at the top of the heap.
Tournament most valuable player Andrew Stire scored 17 points to lead the Brothers to a 62-49 victory over Albany Academy in Tuesday’s Class AA final at the Times Union Center.
The Brothers (21-3) assumed control of the game in the second half. They twice jumped out to large leads before fending off a late rally by the Cadets (22-2) to win their fourth Sectional title in the last seven years.
CBA used a balanced attack to defeat Albany Academy, the state’s No. 2-ranked team. Besides Stire’s 17 points, the Brothers received 14 points from junior guard Kameron Ritter and 11 points from sophomore guard Galal Cancer. Josh Dennis and Joe Krong each added a pair of three-pointers.
Chris Pelcher netted 18 points, and Jamel Fields chipped in 17 points for Albany Academy.
CBA advances to Saturday’s regional in Syracuse. The Brothers will face either Section III champion CBA-Syracuse or Section X champ Massena.`
