Guilderland senior Matt Cubillos closed out his high school wrestling career with a fifth-place finish in the Division I (large school) 130-pound weight class at the New York State Championships last weekend at Albany’s Times Union Center.
After a 2-1 double overtime quarterfinal loss to Wayne’s Vinnie Digravio, Cubillos responded with a 9-3 victory over Chenango Forks’ Jordan Dyer to ensure a top-six finish. Cubillos lost to Valley Central’s Cody Ruggirello in the consolation semifinals to drop down to the fifth-place bout, but he came back with a 7-1 victory over Connor Hanafee of Monsignor Farrell from New York City.
Cubillos opened the tournament with a 6-4 victory over Islip’s Kyle Wade.
Guilderland’s Devan Van Auken failed to place in the 215-pound weight class after finishing with a 1-2 record.
Van Auken was pinned by Matthew Johnson of Niagara Falls in the first period of their opening-round bout. The Guilderland senior defeated Union-Endicott’s Greg Faughnan 12-2 in the first round of wrestlebacks and had a 10-0 lead on Baldwinsville’s Kyle Sheridan in the second round when Sheridan pulled a reversal and pinned Van Auken.
In Division II, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk’s Andy Lyman placed sixth at 125 pounds. Lyman won two consecutive bouts in the consolation round before losing to South Jefferson’s Sean Hanson in the semifinals and Frewsburg’s Dalton Scalf in the fifth-place bout.
R-C-S’s Joey Persico finished with a 0-2 record at 112 pounds. Voorheesville’s Jerry Clark had a 1-2 record at 152 pounds.`
