Bethlehem Police said a woman called them on her cell phone reporting that a mannequin was on fire in the middle of intersection of Winnie Road and Cedar drive, but discovered it was the body of a 40-year-old man.
Deputy Chief Tim Beebe said they got the call around 11:30 a.m.
We got the call from a cell phone from a women reporting what could be a body or a mannequin, Beebe said. `It was a body.`
He added that the body was found in the middle of the road and was still on fire when emergency crews arrived on the scene.
`He was right in the roadway. We did find a vehicle that we believe might be registered to him,` said Beebe, `but that is all the information we are releasing now.`
Beebe said the police would not release the identity of the victim until it has been confirmed and the next of kin has been notified. Being on an access road to the park there were other cars in the vicinity, he said.
`I don’t anticipate there being any additional information at this time,` Beebe said. `We won’t know more until the autopsy is done and that probably won’t be until tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.
Beebe did say that along with the Selkirk Fire Department, Bethlehem Police and the Albany County Paramedics on the scene that Bethlehem detectives and the major crimes unit was dispatched to the scene to investigate.
