The Town of Milton has prepared a tentative budget for 2009 weighing in at $8.5 million.
A number of areas will require increases in funding, most notably the highway department, where a budget of nearly $3.3 million is proposed, up from the just over $2.5 million that will probably be spent this year. There will once again be no highway tax, however.
Despite the rising cost of fuel and petroleum-based products that the town and highway department must account for, Town Supervisor Frank Thompson said it is likely the town tax will not increase.
I’m pretty sure we’re going to be able to hold the margin on taxes, said Thompson.
The preliminary budget calls for a tax rate of 45 cents per $1,000 of assessed value in the Village of Ballston Spa and 65 per $1,000 of assessed value for the town outside of the village.
Thompson also noted that the tentative budget is essentially a `wish list` for the town, and that changes are possible before the adoption of a finished product.
To that end, the Town Board will hold open budget workshops on Tuesday, Oct. 14 and Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in Milton Town Hall. There will also be a public hearing on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.
