Teacher Matt Nelligan, who was the center of a controversy during the summer involving a culture climate inquiry, handed in his letter of resignation on Friday, Sept. 5, according to school officials.
`We want to stress there is a certified long-term substitute taking over,` Amy Zurlo, communication specialist for the district, said.
Nelligan and colleague Ann Marie McManus were involuntarily transferred from the high school to the middle school after a culture climate inquiry by a third party citing homophobic language in the Social Studies department, although nothing was pinned to Nelligan or McManus specifically.
Superintendent John McGuire received criticism for his decision and protest groups formed as a result.
Calls to Nelligan were not returned as of press time.
Mark Hansen, a spokesman for the New York state Senate, confirmed Nelligan has taken a position with the Members Service Unit, and he will begin that position effective Sept. 23.
Hansen said Nelligan is going to `assist the Senators with various projects,` as part of his job.
