Rain or shine, Nancy Pierce will be protected on her property now, thanks to Umbrella of Colonie Home Maintenance Program.
Executive Director of Colonie Senior Service Centers Ed Neary announced the launch of the new program, which has senior-citizen-maintenance-people conducting small maintenance tasks in the homes of fellow senior citizens throughout Colonie.
The announcement was made Wednesday, June 18, in Pierce’s front yard.
During the announcement, Neary thanked the Albany County Legislature for funds for the program, as well as major funding provided by Capital Communications Federal Credit Union.
The seniors helping seniors program is designed to provide `reliable and affordable home care` to seniors, according to Tony Scardillo, director of Umbrella of Colonie Home Maintenance Program.
This includes installing grab bars near stairways, and slip guards under throw rugs.
Pierce said she had been living in her home since 1976 and enrolled in the program so that she would receive assistance in electrical issues, plumbing and painting.
Scardillo said that he has received about 50 requests from other local seniors expressing interest in the program and that their names are now being collected for a list.
To be a member, seniors pay an annual fee of $250 and $12 per hour for general home maintenance jobs.
