Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake’s Meaghan Gregory and Shenendehowa’s Michelle Quimby each won titles at last weekend’s New York State High School Indoor Track and Field Championships at Cornell University.
Gregory claimed the public school division and Federation championships in the girls 3,000-meter race with a time of 10:07.92, nearly one second ahead of runner-up Shelby Greany of Suffern (Section I). Gregory’s BH-BL teammate Molly Pezzulo was fifth in a time of 10:10.48, and Shen’s Morgan Roche placed ninth in a time of 10:25.70.
Quimby took first place in the girls pole vault by clearing 11 feet, 6 inches. Cornwall’s Kesley Branch was second after clearing 11-3.
Shen sophomores Cara Janeczko and Meredith Cully also brought home a state title as part of Section II’s distance medley relay team. Janeczko, Cully, Greenwich’s Roxanne Henningson and Guilderland’s Liz Schwenker won the event in a time of 10:28.13, nearly four seconds ahead of Section III (Syracuse).
Saratoga Springs’ Madalayne Smith placed in two events at states. Smith finished second in the 55-meter hurdles with a Section II-record time of 8.14 seconds, and she placed fifth in the 55 dash finals with a time of 7.23 seconds.
Saratoga’s Hannah Davidson added a third-place finish in the 1,500 with a time of 4:39.80. BH-BL’s Sam Roecker was fifth with a time of 4:42.52.
In the boys’ division, Saratoga’s Demetri Goutos earned an individual title, and BH-BL’s Otis Ubriaco was part of a state championship intersectional relay team.
Goutos claimed the state and Federation 3,200 title with a time of 9:26.02, more than two seconds ahead of runner-up Pat DuPont of Fairport (Section V). Shen’s Dan Harris was fifth in a time of 9:34.15.
Ubriaco joined Alney Tobias, Zach Williams and Kewsi Burgess to win the intersectional distance medley relay in a time of 9:00.02, one-tenth of a second ahead of the Catholic High School Athletic Association team from New York City.
Shen’s Jeff Reinker was the only other Saratoga County athlete to place in the top five of an individual event. Reinker finished fourth in the boys pole vault after clearing 13 feet, 6 inches. `
