The Voorheesville girls volleyball team made history just by taking the Glens Falls Civic Center court Saturday.
The Blackbirds played in their first New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament. And though Voor-heesville was eliminated from the class C bracket with a 2-4 record in pool play, the players were happy to get as far as they did.
I think it was a combination of teamwork and drive, said senior tri-captain Alyssa Cave. `We just wanted to keep going as far as we could.`
`Our team gets along really well, and I think that’s what got us here,` added senior tri-captain Kristen Lysenko.
The Blackbirds had a strong regular season, including a second-place finish in the Colonial Council. Then in Sectionals, Voorheesville overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat HoosicValley 3-2 for the class C championship. The Blackbirds followed that up with a three-game sweep in their regional against Tupper Lake to earn their trip to Glens Falls.
Things did not go well for Voorheesville in its first two pool play matches. Section I champion Westlake defeated the Blackbirds 25-15 and 25-12. Then, eventual state champion Eden (Section VI) defeated Voorheesville 25-14 and 25-9. The Blackbirds finished with a 25-19, 25-11 sweep against Center Moriches (Section XI).“
