Schenectady County legislators announced today a series of amendments to the County Manager’s budget proposal. The amendments reduced the county’s property tax levy from an increase of 9.7 percent to 4.48 percent.
According to Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee Philip Fields, D-Schenectady, the legislature was able to make $2.5 million worth of cuts and increase revenues by $1.2 million through the sale of county property.
Fields said legislators were able to save $1.5 million by eliminating 15 county positions and eliminating management salary increases in 2008.
Legislators also plan to have the Department of Social Services absorb the Schenectady Job Training Agency, which would allow DSS to more efficiently assist its clients in gaining employment.
The County Legislature is scheduled to vote on the budget during a special meeting Thursday, Oct. 25.
