With the change of season comes a change of pace around Schenectady County. Local business and organizations are preparing for a variety of art shows, ethnic festivals, reopenings and open houses.
The 56th annual Stockade Villager’s Outdoor Art Show will take place Saturday, Sept. 8, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. around the Lawrence Statue in the Stockade.
Visitors will find a variety of paintings, photographs and sculptures for sale.
Art Night Schenectady, which is held on the third Friday of every month, will take place again downtown Friday, Sept. 21.
This month, Umbrella of the Capital District, a local nonprofit organization providing services to the elderly and people with disabilities to enable them to stay in their homes, will host the Art of the Umbrella during Art Night Schenectady.
The event, which is collaboration with 440 State Street Arts Center and the Saratoga Council for the Arts, will be a fundraising auction featuring an array of umbrellas decorated by creative and talented people within the community.
The event will be held at the Proctor’s GE Theater at 6 p.m.
The 32nd annual St. George’s Greek Festival is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, Sept. 7-9.
The festival features Greek food and pastries, arts, crafts, music and dancing. This year the Fotia Hellenic Society will be performing throughout the weekend and church tours and Greek dance lessons will be available. St. George’s is located at 510 Liberty St.
Italian heritage will be celebrated at the second annual Little Italy Street Fest Saturday, Sept. 8, from noon to 8 p.m. The event will feature live music, family activities, cultural exhibits and food. Little Italy is located on N. Jay Street between Union Street and South Avenue.
The 48th annual Stockade Walkabout and Waterfront Faire is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29. The event features guided tours of private historic homes and public buildings within the Stockade. Tickets for the event are $25 and include free entry to the Waterfront Faire in Riverside Park, which will have food, crafts, Colonial artisans, historic preservation demonstrations, carriage rides and live music.
The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are available at the Historic Society on Washington Avenue.
Proctor’s Theater is planning a Grand Re-Opening Open House for the week of Sept. 24. On Sunday, Sept. 30, visitors can take self-guided tours of all three theaters including the new GE Theater and watch backstage
demonstrations, organ demonstrations and two new iWERKS movies. The event starts at 1 p.m.
Experience and Creative Design on Union Street is also planning an open house for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8 and 9.
Paintings and sculptures from artists Audrey Romano, Nadia Spiak Rymanowski, Nancy J. Sylvester-Hunt, and Lorraine Hall will be available along with Experience’s usual display. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The Schenectady County Library will have a used book sale Saturday, Sept. 29, and Sunday, Sept. 30. The sale will include hardcovers, paperbacks, children’s books, records and CDs. Sunday will be a $2 bag sale. The event goes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
