A Moreau man, the prime suspect in a Broadway bank robbery in Saratoga Springs, turned himself in to police in downtown Nashville, Tenn., on Thursday, July 19.
Rick L. Massey, 46, the prime suspect in the robbery of the Adirondack Trust Co. bank, walked up to an off-duty Nashville Metropolitan Police Officer and told him he had robbed a bank, city police said. He also told the officer that he had the money on his person, and then showed him $4,100 that was in a plastic bag in his boot.
Saratoga Springs Police Chief Edward Moore said Massey was most likely en route to Oklahoma, where he had lived before coming north.
It’s my understanding that he did not want to be on the run anymore and turned himself in, Moore said.
Massey has a criminal record that includes about two years spent in prison in Oklahoma on theft charges, and a charge of resisting police, according to Moore.
A warrant has been issued for Massey in this case for one count of first-degree robbery, a felony that carries an eight- to 25-year jail sentence, said Murphy.
Moore said public tips that came into the police department after bank surveillance photos were released indicated that Massey knew police were after him.
The bank was robbed the afternoon of Friday, July 13. Police said a lone man entered the bank and threatened to kill a female teller and made off with approximately $7,000. He did not brandish a weapon, they said.
Massey entered the bank on Broadway at Church Street at 3:30 p.m. with a dark portfolio and put a note on the counter, Saratoga Springs Police Chief Edward Moore said. He then told the teller that he had a gun and would kill her.
Bank personnel sounded the alarm after he left the building’s rear door, but no ink packet or security device had been placed in the bag of cash that Massey escaped with, said John Boyd, who manages security at the bank.
Saratoga County District Attorney James Murphy III said video surveillance tape was integral in identifying the suspect.
