Three Niskayuna boys qualified for this weekend’s New York State Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Kingston at last week’s Section II large school meet in Johnstown.
Kyle O’Connor placed second to Guilderland’s Brian Rhodes-Devey in both the 800- and 1,600-meter races. O’Connor will compete in the 800 at states after posting a time of 1:54.10.
John Reilly and Louis Serafini will also be in Kington this weekend. Reilly finished second in the 400 dash with a qualifying time of 49.65 seconds, while Serafini is competing in the 1,600 based on his season-best time of 4:22.00. Serafini was fourth at the state qualifier with a time of 4:24.93, but the top two runners Rhodes-Devey and O’Connor are focusing on the 800.
Scotia-Glenville, Mohonasen and Schenectady Christian School each have a representative heading to states. Pete Rowell (Scotia-Glenville) won the large school 400 intermediate hurdles with a time of 55.10 seconds, while Joe Grassia (Mohonasen) claimed the shot put title with a throw of 53 feet, 5 inches. Jon Henk (Schenectady Christian) earned the small school 400 dash title with a time of 50.84 seconds.
Scotia-Glenville is also sending the King sisters to states. Carolyn King won the large school 800 with a time of 2:10.54, while younger sister Jillian King placed second in the 3,000 with a qualifying time of 9:52.87.
Niskayuna’s Patty Horan qualified for states after placing second in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet.
The state track and field meet begins Friday at Dietz Stadium with the public school championships. Federation races take place Saturday.“
