A suspect in a Cohoes double shooting was apprehended and arrested in Malta over the weekend.
Peter McKnight was found in the vicinity of the Malta Diner and Dunkin’ Donuts along Route 67 and arrested by the Saratoga County sheriff’s deputies the evening of Saturday, April 29.
This was a very heads-up arrest by the deputy on patrol, said Saratoga County Undersheriff Michael Woodcock.
A description of the male suspect and the vehicle he was last seen in, a 2006 Toyota 4-Runner, had been provided to area law enforcement agencies.
The vehicle was found unoccupied in the Shops of Malta Plaza at about 8 p.m. on Friday, April 27. At that point, Woodcock said, Malta became the focus of the search for McKnight.
Woodcock said McKnight spent Friday night `in a shack in close proximity` to the area. Woodcock said an officer approached McKnight the evening of Saturday, April 28, and apprehended the suspect without incident. McKnight was turned over to the Cohoes Police Department later that evening.
`This was a fairly quick capture,` said Lt. Tom Ross, a detective with the Cohoes Police Department. `We attribute that to the Saratoga Sheriff’s Department and the state troopers working with us, as well as the detectives in the Cohoes Police Department.`
Ross said McKnight has been living in the Boulder, Colo., area for about the past year and half.
McKnight allegedly entered his estranged wife’s Deerfield Drive home in Cohoes, shooting Adrienne McKnight in the arm and her unidentified male friend in the chest.
The McKnights’ 5-year-old son was at home during the shooting and has been placed with family members, said Ross.
`It appears to be an ongoing domestic problem,` said Ross of McKnight’s motive.
McKnight has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, burglary in the first degree and possession of a loaded firearm. He is scheduled to appear in Cohoes court on Thursday, May 3, for a preliminary hearing. “
